STCW Basic Safety Training

What is the Proficiency in Designated Security Duties  (PDSD) Course?

The Proficiency in Designated Security Duties is aimed to cover all the essential details, practices and regulations required by a crew member undertaking a designated security duty whilst onboard a vessel.

The one day course covers all the basics, such as why security on a vessel is so important, the roles and responsibilities of those onboard in different security roles, what risks, threats and vulnerabilities there are to a ship, and the extents and limitations of security practices.

Our PDSD course at South West Maritime Academy is set out by the STCW and  Manila amendments 2010 that contain new requirements regarding security training. this course supersedes the Proficiency in Security Awareness

In fact these regulations came into force 1 January 2014 yet many crew members are still not compliant and therefore render the vessel open to being detained by port state control. Training must be undertaken by all seafarers and security personnel who have designated duties under the Ships Security Plan (SSP), as set out by STCW A-VI16-2.

Furthermore all of our training is carried out by instructors with the highest level of maritime security experience so when you come to us for maritime security training of any kind you can be sure you are getting the best in the industry.
