Certificate validity: 5 years

Certification: Upon successful completion certification will be provided approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency as meeting the requirements laid down in:

Regulation VI/2, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/2, paragraphs 1 to 4 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended and has also met the additional criteria specified in the STCW Convention and Code

Prerequisites: Before commencing the Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB) training, trainees must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Received approved or recognised training in Personal Survival Techniques or Updated Personal Survival Techniques in the last 5 years
  • Have at least six months sea service

Training may be undertaken by individuals who have not achieved the sea service requirement of a minimum six months, but the certificate will not be awarded until proof of completion of six months sea service has been provided.

What is the Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats course?

Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats courses are a mix of hands-on and theory learning, teaching essential skills for those in a coxswain role on lifeboats and rescue boats, or those tasked with crewing such vessels in the case of an emergency on board and run over 4 days.

The purpose of the Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB) course, sometimes referred to as lifeboat training (or by some as the CPSC – Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft course) is to prepare crew should they be faced with an emergency onboard resulting in them either having to abandon ship or rescue a crew member in a man over board situation.

It is our objective at South West Maritime Academy to ensure crew members are competent and confident to launch, recover and coxswain a survival craft or rescue boat should they be tasked to save lives at sea or in case of emergency on board a vessel.

This training will meet the Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency (KUP) requirements as set out in the following:

Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than fast rescue Boats) Course Content:

The Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats – or PSCRB – course runs over 4 days and covers a range of both theory based and practical knowledge and skills.

This course was formerly referred to as the ‘Advanced Sea Survival’ course, and known by many as the CPSC (Certificate in Proficiency in Survival Craft)  course.

By the end of the PSCRB course, students should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Take charge of a survival craft or rescue boat during and after launch
  • Operate a survival craft engine
  • Manage survivors and survival craft after abandoning ship
  • Use locating devices including communications, signalling apparatus and pyrotechnics
  • Apply first aid to survivors.

This course is a mixture of both classroom based theory and water & lifeboat station practical learning.

having attended this course and gained certification, a natural progression may be the STCW Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats course.
