STCW Updating Training is set out in the 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW Convention (STCW 2010) bring a a number of changes with a view of improving maritime safety. The most significant amendment is the requirement for all seafarers to conduct 5 yearly updates on elements of the STCW mandatory safety training modules.
5 yearly STCW updating training applies to:
- Personal Survival Techniques
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting,
- Advanced Fire Fighting,
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than Fast Rescue Boats)
- Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats.
From 1 January 2017 seafarers revalidating their MCA Certificate of Competence are required to provide evidence of having either completed these courses within the past five years or that updating training has been undertaken as set out above.
If crews cannot provide evidence of having met the updating training requirements as set out by the STCW Manila Amendments, the vessel could fail a port state control inspection which will result in delays and fines.
