Whether you’re pursuing recreational seafaring or a professional maritime career, this STCW course provides the foundational safety training you need.

STCW Basic Safety Training Week

To begin your career at sea you will require a set of maritime safety certifications, which are often grouped into a package of courses often referred to as the STCW Basic Safety Training Week or STCW BST. These certifications cover all the basic safety requirements you’ll need to begin a career at sea.

The modules listed within the course are a requirement for commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore or Ocean that are working towards the MCA STCW Master Yacht 200 Tonnes (OOW 500 tonnes). And are also required by Masters and deck officers in commercial vessels over 24m in length and less than 500GT.

In addition to the STCW Basic Safety Training, you’ll need an ENG1 medical certificate. This is a medical examination approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and must be conducted by an MCA-approved doctor. You can find a local approved doctor on the .gov.uk website here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is STCW-95?

STCW-95 stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping. Created by the International Maritime Organisation in 1978 and amended in 1995, the STCW-95 code came into international effect in February 2003. The code was introduced to set minimum international training standards for professional mariners.

What is STCW-2010?

Known as the 2010 STCW Manila amendments, you must have documented evidence of completing the following training or have updated training within the last five years.

Why do I have to complete Basic Training?

It is a statutory requirement to have completed the this training so you are aware of safety procedures that will keep yourself, your crew members and passengers safe.

How will this course help my career progression?

This depends on what direction you want to take your yachting career. With the Basic Safety Training certification under your belt you will have the options to work on super yachts, wind farms, private yacht charter, flotilla and deliveries all over 24m.

What will STCW certification enable me to do?

Although it is a safety requirement to hold the certification to work at sea, it is not a qualification that alone will get you a job in the maritime industry. This is because it doesn’t give you the skills, knowledge or seamanship needed to work at sea.

Should I have a certificate although I already hold yachting qualifications?

Having a certificate alongside your current qualifications will show potential employers that you are not only a highly qualified candidate but someone who is serious about a career in the industry.

Will I get cold and wet during the Sea Survival module?

The short answer is no. You will be wearing a commercial immersion suit throughout which is designed to keep you warm and dry. For whatever reason should you get wet and cold during the Personal Survival Techniques course we will get you out of the water, warm you up and get you back in when you’re ready.

Do I need to do all modules?

Any persons wishing to work at sea are required to complete all 4 basic modules and one of the mandatory security training courses depending on your role. However there are exceptions whereby some companies stipulate you only require the Personal Survival Techniques (Sea Survival) module if you are simply transferring to complete contract work on a wind farm or inland structure. We would highly recommend you check this with your employer prior to booking on any course.

Do I need to provide any of my own equipment?

No, everything you require for the training will be provided. Smart casual clothing for the theory sessions and a couple of sets of clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty/wet (tracksuit bottoms and T-shirt).

How can I book onto the course?

You can book onto by registering using the link next to your chosen date above. You can also book onto separate modules or the full course for a discounted rate.
