Description
This course, often called Sea Survival training, covers all the essentials for handling a survival situation at sea.
As a core part of the STCW Basic Safety Training certification, it provides both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need to respond effectively to an emergency. This module is one of two that requires refresher training every five years to keep your skills current.
What You'll Learn
The course is divided into two key parts: essential theory and practical application.
-
Theory: You'll learn about the types of emergencies that can occur at sea, such as collision, fire, or sinking. You will also study the various types of life-saving equipment found on ships, including their purpose and proper use.
-
Practical Skills: You will get hands-on experience with critical survival techniques. This includes:
-
Donning a lifejacket and an immersion suit.
-
Safely entering the water from a height.
-
Righting an inverted life raft.
-
Swimming while wearing a lifejacket and keeping afloat.
-
Boarding a life raft from both the ship and the water.
-
Operating essential survival equipment, like drogues and radio location devices.
-
By the end of this training, you will have the confidence and skills to take the initial actions needed to enhance your chance of survival in a maritime emergency.
Prerequisites
Participants must be aged 16 or over.
Updated Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques: As the training content aligns with the full syllabus, bookings for the update course (UPST) are managed through our standard Personal Survival Techniques bookings on this page.
