Certification: Upon successful completion you will receive a certificate in STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities approved by the Maritime Coastguard Agency as laid down in STCW 95 Regulation VI/1 paragraph 2.1.4 of Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code.

STCW Basic Safety Training

This STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR) course module gives basic induction training in safety procedures and accident prevention and familiarizes novice seafarers with employment and working conditions aboard. It is a classroom based theory course.

Personal Safety and Social Responsibility teaches a broad, if basic,  knowledge of and compliance with safe working practices on board a vessel. The course aims to make new crew members familiar with life on board, employment and expectations and essential safety considerations.

This course contains some exercises that are physically demanding. Any candidate unsure of their fitness for such activities should consult their doctor.

Personal Safety and Social Responsibility

Subjects covered in this course will include:

  • Human relationships on-board vessel.
  • Vessel crew organisational structure and employment terms.
  • Understanding orders and how to be understood in relation to duties on your vessel.
  • Awareness of and compliance with various emergency procedures.
  • Safe working practices.
  • Precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment.
  • Social responsibilities on a vessel.

Course Content:

  • Complying with emergency procedures
  • Observing safe working practices
  • Understanding orders and being understood in relation to shipboard duties
  • Contributing to effective human relationships on board ship
  • Types of emergency which may occur, such as collision, fire foundering
  • Knowledge of shipboard contingency plans for responses to emergencies
  • Effect of operational or accidental pollution of the marine environment
  • Basic environmental protection procedures
  • Importance of maintaining good human working relationships aboard ship
  • Social responsibilities; employment conditions; individual rights and obligations; dangers of drug and alcohol abuse

The STCW PSSR course can be taken as a stand alone course or as an integral part of our STCW Basic Safety Training course package.
