Description

MCA Approved Engine Course 1 (AEC1)

This course is designed to take you from an entry level understanding of marine diesel engines to the skills needed to confidently manage and maintain an engine on a vessel. It's a great choice for new crew members or anyone looking to expand their knowledge of marine engineering.

The course combines hands-on practical learning in our purpose-built engineering shed with in-depth classroom theory. Led by a highly experienced marine engineer, this course is both engaging and interactive.

Course Content:

You will learn about the following essential elements of marine diesel engines and their operation:

  • Engine fundamentals: The compression ignition cycle, construction, and power transmission.

  • Engine systems: The fuel, air, cooling, lubrication, and electrical systems.

  • Safety and regulations: Safe working practices, marine pollution codes, and bottled LPG installations.

  • Hull fittings and personal protective equipment (PPE), which is supplied as required.

This course is often a prerequisite for a number of roles; for specific engineering competency requirements on different vessel types, refer to the following:

  • Safety of Large Commercial Sailing and Motor Vessels: Annex 5

  • Safety of Small Commercial Motor Vessels: Annex 7

  • Safety of Small Workboats and Pilot Boats: Annex 11

Prerequisites

None. Participants must be aged 18 or over.
