Proficiency in Security Awareness FAQ

What is Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA)?
Proficiency in Security Awareness is a mandatory STCW training module designed for all seafarers. It provides a basic understanding of how to recognize security threats and how to report security-related incidents on board a vessel complying with the ISPS Code.
Who is required to hold an STCW PSA certificate?
Any person employed or engaged in any capacity on a ship which is required to comply with the ISPS Code, but who does not have specific designated security duties, must hold a PSA certificate. This includes staff working on cruise ships, superyachts, and merchant vessels.
What is the difference between PSA and PDSD?
PSA is general awareness for all crew members. Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD) is a more advanced course required for crew who have specific security responsibilities, such as gangway security or access control.
How long is the PSA certificate valid for?
Once issued, an STCW Proficiency in Security Awareness certificate does not currently have an expiry date and does not require mandatory refresher training under the present MCA guidelines.
Is the PSA course included in the Basic Safety Training week?
Yes, it is the fifth module included in our comprehensive 5-day STCW Basic Safety Training Week. It is typically delivered as a half-day session alongside other theory modules.
Can I take the Proficiency in Security Awareness course online?
While security training is a theory-based module, South West Maritime Academy provides this as a classroom-based session to ensure interactive learning and full compliance with MCA approval standards for professional certification.
What does A-VI/6-1 refer to?
A-VI/6-1 is the specific section of the STCW Code that sets out the mandatory minimum requirements for security-related training and instruction for all seafarers. Successful completion of this course ensures you meet these international legal standards.
How much does the PSA course cost as a standalone module?
As a standalone half-day module, the Proficiency in Security Awareness course is priced at £100.00 including VAT. However, most students find it more cost-effective to book it as part of the full STCW Basic Safety Training package.
