The Merchant Navy is a massive, multi-billion pound industry responsible for 95% of the UK’s imports. Unlike the Royal Navy, it is a civilian sector made up of private companies. If you are seeking a career change that offers high-level responsibility, tax-free salary potential (under the Seafarers’ Earnings Deduction), and the opportunity to work on some of the world’s most advanced vessels, the Merchant Navy is your destination.
At South West Maritime Academy, we act as the bridge between your ambition and the water, providing the STCW certification and professional advice required to secure offshore jobs and global shipping roles.
Understanding the Industry Departments
A vessel is a floating city, and careers are broadly categorized into three distinct professional streams:
- The Deck Department: Navigation, bridge watchkeeping, and cargo management. This path leads from Deck Cadet to Captain (Master).
- The Engineering Department: Maintenance of massive propulsion systems, electrical power generation, and refrigeration. This path leads from Engine Cadet to Chief Engineer.
- The Ratings & Support: The “hands-on” technical crew who perform the essential daily operations of the ship, from welding and maintenance to deck work.
Why the Merchant Navy is a Prime Sector for a Career Change
Many of our students are military veterans or technical professionals from land-based engineering. The industry highly values transferable skills such as discipline, technical aptitude, and the ability to work in remote environments. With the current global shortage of qualified seafarers, maritime recruitment is at an all-time high, making now the perfect time to gain your STCW certification and get to sea.
