Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) Course

Looking to become a professional deckhand or advance your seafaring career? Our Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) course is the perfect place to start. This hands-on, five-day course provides you with the essential skills and knowledge needed to become a safe and effective member of a vessel's deck crew.

This course is a key requirement for two major certifications:

  • Officer of the Watch (Yacht less than 3000 Gt)

  • Able Seafarer Deck Certificate (Regulation II/5)

What You'll Learn

Our curriculum is designed to give you both the theoretical knowledge and practical experience you need to succeed. Through a mix of classroom instruction and hands-on training, you'll cover a wide range of topics, including:

Seamanship and Nautical Knowledge

  • Mastering maritime terminology and ship components, from decks and compartments to essential gear.

  • Understanding ship navigation, including compass bearings and helm orders.

  • Learning essential safety procedures for life-saving and firefighting equipment.

  • Practicing musters, drills, and emergency alarm responses.

Shipboard Maintenance & Rope Work

  • Gaining practical experience in general shipboard maintenance, including painting, cleaning, and routine repairs.

  • Learning how to safely use and maintain both hand and power tools.

  • Mastering a wide variety of essential knots, bends, hitches, and splices.

  • Understanding the care and storage of ropes, cables, and chains.

Mooring, Anchoring, and Cargo

  • Mastering safe mooring operations, including the functions of mooring and tug lines.

  • Practicing the procedures for anchoring, weighing anchor, and warping.

  • Becoming proficient in cargo handling, stowage, and securing.

  • Learning to identify and handle dangerous and hazardous materials safely.

This course is your opportunity to "learn the ropes" and develop the skills that will help you work efficiently and safely on any vessel.

Prerequisites

We've designed this course for aspiring seafarers in the yacht, workboat, and fishing industries. To be eligible for the Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) course, you must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Participants must be aged 17 or over.
  • Hold an MCA-accepted Yachtmaster Offshore certificate and have completed the shore-based course.

  • Be a Yacht rating with at least 6 months of sea service and possess a steering or Navigational Watch Rating certificate.

  • Hold a Fishing Class 2 Certificate of Competency or have completed the Seafish 5-day watchkeeping course for fishing vessels under 16.5 meters.

  • Possess BML Tier 1, Level 2 certificates.

  • Be a Tug rating with at least 6 months of sea time and hold a steering or Navigational Watch Rating certificate.

Certification and Assessment

To receive your EDH certificate, you’ll need to complete a minimum of six months of sea service on vessels over 15 meters in length.
