MCA Approved Engine Course 2 (AEC2)

The Approved Engine Course 2 (AEC2) builds directly on the foundation of the Approved Engine Course 1 (AEC1). This five-day (35-hour) course is designed for those who want to deepen their marine engineering knowledge and advance their careers. It's a great fit for owners and operators of small commercial vessels, private yachts, and superyachts.

Led by an experienced marine engineer, the course combines hands-on practical training in our dedicated engineering shed with in-depth classroom theory. This practical approach allows you to learn from real-world examples and gain valuable insights.

Course Content

You will learn about the following advanced marine engineering topics:

  • Maintenance: Systems and processes for maintenance, safe working practices, and lifting operations.

  • Systems: Advanced knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, and refrigeration systems.

  • Vessel systems: Portable freshwater and sewage systems.

  • Legislation: Management and legislative requirements.

Career Progression

Completing the AEC2 course opens up new opportunities, allowing you to work in a dual deck/engineer role or as a small vessel engineer. It is a core requirement for your Small Vessel Certificate of Competency (CoC) and is a key part of the Second Officer qualification for vessels under 3000 gross tonnes/9000 kW.

Combined with your AEC1 certificate, the AEC2 also contributes to the MCA Marine Engine Operators Licence (MEOL), a required qualification for Chief Engineers on UK-flagged vessels.

Prerequisites

Participants must be aged 18 or over and previously completed the MCA Approved Engine Course 1 (AEC1).
