Description

This intensive course is designed to meet and exceed the required standard of competence for STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, ensuring you are fully proficient in modern firefighting techniques and equipment. Through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on, realistic drills, you will maintain the critical skills needed to respond effectively to a fire emergency at sea.

Key Learning Objectives

You will gain practical, hands-on experience in the following areas:

Fire Extinguisher Operation

Learn to correctly select and use portable and mobile (wheeled) fire extinguishers on various fire types, including solid materials, flammable liquids, and gases, as per international safety standards.

Hose and Equipment Handling

Master the use of hoses, nozzles, and specialized hose equipment. This includes identifying different types and sizes of hoses, making secure connections, performing nozzle maintenance, and effectively using foam-making equipment to tackle specific fire classes.

Team-Based Firefighting

Participate in realistic, team-based exercises to extinguish a variety of fires using equipment commonly found on board. This includes:

  • Chemical Agent Application: Extinguishing fires with foam, powder, or other suitable chemical agents.
  • Confined Space Tactics: Using a water fog applicator to suppress fires in enclosed areas.
  • Oil Fire Suppression: Tackling extensive oil fires with dry chemical powder/foam applicators.
  • Major Fire Management: Utilizing jet/spray nozzles with water to manage and extinguish large-scale fires.

Breathing Apparatus (BA) and Rescue Techniques

Test and use self-contained breathing apparatus (BA) and associated equipment with a focus on teamwork and safety. Your training will cover:

  • Equipment Checks: Performing essential start-up and in-use checks, including gauge readings and communication protocols.
  • Safe Procedures: Executing critical safety procedures such as door opening, ladder use, search and rescue techniques, and casualty evacuation in low visibility and smoke-filled environments.
  • Casualty Rescue: Practicing effective casualty rescue and communication while working as a team in heavy smoke.

Realistic Scenario Training

Apply your skills to extinguish fires in realistic, simulated environments, including both accommodation and engine room areas, under heavy smoke conditions.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will have demonstrated the competence required to act as a valuable member of a firefighting team on board any vessel, ensuring the safety of personnel and the ship itself.

Prerequisites

Seafarers who have a certificate of proficiency in fire prevention and fire fighting. N.B. Certificates of proficiency issued under the authority of other administrations will be acceptable.
