Description

This course is designed for individuals who will serve as the Ship Security Officer. The primary duties of an SSO include:

  • Maintaining and supervising the implementation of the ship security plan.

  • Assessing security risks, threats, and vulnerabilities.

  • Conducting regular inspections to ensure security measures are in place and effective.

  • Ensuring security equipment and systems are properly operated, tested, and calibrated.

  • Promoting security awareness and vigilance among the crew.

Course Content

The course is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of ship security, covering the following topics:

  1. Importance of Ship Security: The roles and responsibilities of various organizations and individuals involved in maintaining ship security.

  2. Risk Assessment: How to assess security risks, threats, and vulnerabilities to the vessel, its crew, cargo, and operations.

  3. Security Methods and Equipment: Understanding the capabilities and limitations of different security methods, equipment, and systems.

  4. Implementing Security Plans: How to effectively implement a ship security plan and comply with related regulatory requirements.

  5. Evaluating Effectiveness: How to determine the effectiveness of existing security arrangements, procedures, and equipment.

  6. Promoting Awareness: Techniques for promoting a culture of security awareness and vigilance on board.

Prerequisites

To undertake this training, you must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Have approved seagoing service of at least 12 months.

  • At the discretion of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), have appropriate sea service (minimum of three months) and sufficient knowledge of ship operations to successfully complete the training objectives.
