Description

Around 4,500 people each year apply to the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) for a commercial endorsement. This endorsement allows you to use your RYA qualifications professionally as a skipper or crew member on a variety of vessels, from workboats with lifting and towing gear to superyachts in the Mediterranean. As a result, your responsibilities are similar to those of a cruise ship captain.

You have a duty of care to your crew, passengers, and other water users. If an incident occurs, you will be held accountable. No matter your specific role, anyone working in the commercial maritime sector is considered a professional seafarer. This course is mandatory for all RYA Commercial Endorsement holders.

The course is divided into four modules:

  • Commercial Environment: Understand your role within the professional maritime industry.

  • People: Learn about appropriate staffing, maintaining professional competency, and the safe management of commercial vessels.

  • Vessel: Focus on the mandatory provision and upkeep of safety equipment, along with the development and implementation of risk management and operational procedures.

  • Purpose: Ensure your vessel is suitable and legally compliant for its intended tasks. This module also covers environmental responsibilities and the importance of effective planning and situational awareness.
