Qualifying as a certified Deck Officer is one of the most rewarding routes in the global maritime industry, providing command opportunities across commercial cargo fleets, offshore vessels, tugs, workboats, renewables crew transfer vessels (CTVs), and superyachts. Regulated in the United Kingdom by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), the route from deckhand or rating to Master requires a structured combination of statutory safety training, qualifying sea service, approved technical study, and formal oral examination.

At South West Maritime Academy, our accredited training programmes—delivered in partnership with Palma Sea School for Mediterranean-based yacht modules—support deck crew at every stage of their professional progression. Whether you are stepping aboard your first commercial vessel, obtaining your Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) certificate, or preparing for your Officer of the Watch (OOW) Certificate of Competency (CoC), use our interactive pathway below to map out your compulsory certificates, course durations, and qualifying milestones.

Statutory Certification Guidance

Please Note: Completing ancillary shore-based courses does not automatically grant a Certificate of Competency. Individual certificates (such as EDH, PSCRB, HELM, and Medical First Aid) are statutory components that must be submitted to the MCA alongside your qualifying sea service testimonials, an approved Training Record Book (TRB), and an ENG 1 medical certificate prior to sitting your formal MCA oral examination.

Description here.

1. Entry-Level Qualifications: STCW Basic Safety & ENG 1

Every seafarer embarking on a commercial career must hold statutory medical clearance and safety certification before stepping foot on a seagoing vessel[cite: 1, 3]. Regulated under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) STCW Convention, these initial qualifications establish fundamental survivability, emergency fire response, and casualty management[cite: 1, 3].

STCW Basic Safety Training Week

The mandatory 5-day entry package for all commercial mariners, workboat hands, and yacht crew, satisfying STCW Table A-VI/1[cite: 1, 2, 7]:

MCA Sea Time & Training Record Book (TRB) Regulations

Qualifying sea service is the foundation of any Deck Officer application. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency applies strict standards to the documentation, logging, and verification of sea time under MSN 1856 (Commercial / Merchant Ships) and MSN 1858 (Yachts <3000GT).

Documenting Qualifying Sea Service

Every day logged toward your CoC must satisfy MCA verification criteria:

  • Discharge Book & Sea Service Testimonials: Must be signed by the Master or Chief Engineer and include the vessel's official number, gross tonnage, engine power, dates of service, and voyage area.
  • Watchkeeping Certificates: For progression beyond OOW, watchkeeping sea time must explicitly state that you were in full charge of a navigational bridge watch for a minimum of 4 hours out of every 24 hours at sea.
  • Yard Time & Standby Limits: The MCA restricts the proportion of shipyard, drydock, or port standby time that can be counted toward seagoing service.

The MCA Yacht & Merchant Training Record Book

The structured bridge log detailing practical competence across all operational areas:

  • Continuous Practical Tasks: Covers buoyage, chart corrections, pilotage planning, anchoring, mooring operations, cargo gear inspection, and emergency drills.
  • Master / Designated Training Officer Sign-Off: Tasks must be witnessed and formally endorsed onboard by an appropriately certified officer.
  • Sea Service Reduction: Completing an approved TRB allows cadets and trainee deckhands to qualify for the OOW examination with significantly less total sea time (12–15 months vs. 36 months via the experienced rating route).
