Competition for roles on the world’s most prestigious yachts is fierce. To be “deck-ready,” you must present a CV that proves you are safe, compliant, and technically capable.
The Mandatory Essentials
Before applying for any role, whether Deckhand, Stewardess, or Chef, you must hold:
- STCW Basic Safety Training: The international legal minimum for all crew. This 5-day course at South West Maritime Academy covers Fire Fighting, Sea Survival, and First Aid.
- Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA): Now a standard requirement for all crew on code-compliant vessels.
- ENG1 Medical Certificate: A certificate of fitness from an MCA-approved doctor. (Note: In 2026, the standard fee is £115).
Level Up: The Competitive Edge
To move beyond entry-level and secure the best offshore jobs, you need additional “tickets.”
At South West Maritime Academy (UK):
- RYA Powerboat Level 2: Vital for driving the yacht’s tenders and guest ribs.
- VHF Short Range Radio: Essential for professional communication.
- Crowd Management: Highly recommended for crew on larger “Mega-Yachts.”
At Palma Sea School (Mallorca): Our sister school in the heart of the Mediterranean offers the next steps in your career:
- RYA Yachtmaster Sail & Motor Courses: The gold standard for aspiring Officers.
- AEC 1 & 2 (Approved Engine Course): Critical for Deck/Engine “dual roles” and junior engineers.
