The renewables industry is one of the most safety-critical sectors in the world. Working at extreme heights, managing high-voltage electricity, and operating in harsh maritime environments requires more than just technical skill—it requires a standardised, global approach to safety. The Global Wind Organisation (GWO) provides this framework, ensuring that certifications are recognised by every major manufacturer and operator globally. At South West Maritime Academy, we provide the essential GWO training modules that serve as your “licence to work” in this booming sector.

The Global Wind Organisation (GWO) Framework

GWO is a non-profit association established by leading turbine manufacturers to provide a baseline for safety training. Their standards are created “by the industry, for the industry,” ensuring modules are aligned with real-world site hazards. All certification records are held in the WINDA database, allowing employers to verify a candidate’s competency instantly.

GWO Basic Safety Training (BST): The Entry Point

GWO Basic Safety Training is the fundamental requirement for anyone seeking a career as a wind turbine technician. South West Maritime Academy offers this comprehensive course at our purpose-built facility, utilising realistic simulations to build muscle memory.

The BST package consists of five core modules:

  • GWO First Aid: Teaches life-saving interventions, including CPR and AED usage, specifically tailored to remote environments where medical help may be delayed.
  • GWO Fire Awareness: Training on hazard identification, evacuation management, and the use of handheld firefighting equipment.
  • GWO Working at Height and Manual Handling: The most critical module, covering PPE usage, fall arrest systems, and tower rescues.
  • GWO Sea Survival: Essential for offshore roles, teaching safe vessel-to-turbine transfer and life raft deployment.

Maintaining Eligibility: GWO BST Refreshers (BSTR)

GWO BST certificates are valid for 24 months. To remain eligible for site access, technicians must complete refresher courses before their certificates expire. South West Maritime Academy offers a dedicated GWO Basic Safety Training Refresher package as well as individual refresher modules:

GWO BSTR Module Duration Key Focus
GWO First Aid Refresher 0.5 Day

Updating life-saving and emergency management skills.

GWO Fire Awareness Refresher 0.5 Day Fire assessment and initial firefighting manoeuvres.
GWO Sea Survival Refresher 1 Day Safe offshore operations and emergency response.
GWO Working at Heights & Manual Handling Refresher 1 Day

Advanced rescue techniques and equipment inspection.

Technical Training and Specialised Certifications

Beyond safety, technical competency is vital. The GWO Basic Technical Training (BTT) package is designed for candidates with limited mechanical or electrical experience, covering hydraulics, mechanical systems, and electrical circuits.

For career progression, technicians often pursue:

  • High Voltage (HV) SAP: City & Guilds accredited HV training is essential for managing grid connections.
  • Blade Repair Technicians: Specialised training in composite materials (fibreglass and epoxy) via GWO Blade Repair or manufacturer-specific certs.
  • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Ultrasonic and radiographic techniques to identify structural flaws; typically requires PCN Level 2 certification.
  • IRATA Rope Access: Combining GWO safety with IRATA qualifications for efficient turbine inspections and repairs.

Cross-Sector Transitions: Oil, Gas, and Maritime

Workers with BOSIET (Oil & Gas) or STCW (Maritime) certs have an excellent baseline but will still require GWO BST for wind site access. Through schemes like the ECITB’s “Connected Competence” and the GWO Recognition scheme, prior learning can sometimes be acknowledged to reduce training time.
