Description

This course provides a thorough understanding of the crucial human factors that impact effective resource management at sea. By addressing the "human element," the industry can minimise accidents, improve operational efficiency, and reduce costs associated with incidents and investigations.

Through a mix of lectures, discussions, and interactive practical exercises, the course covers:

  • Situation and Risk Assessment: Understanding how decision-making principles influence safety.
  • Communication: Mastering best-practice techniques and recognising barriers to effective messaging.
  • Teamwork and Leadership: Identifying effective leadership behaviours and managing conflict within diverse crews.
  • Workload Management: Recognising fatigue and stress in yourself and others, and developing coping strategies.
  • Cultural Awareness: Understanding national and organisational biases to improve cooperation.

Certification and Assessment

Upon successful completion, candidates will be issued an MCA-approved HELM (Operational Level) certificate.

Assessment: Continuous observation during practical exercises and group discussions, complemented by written evaluations.

Entry Requirements and Target Audience

Target Audience: Junior Deck and Engineering Officers, those seeking their first watchkeeping certificates, and shore-based personnel or hotel/purser staff looking to enhance their management skills.

HELM Entry Requirements: Candidates should be progressing toward an officer-level role.

Prerequisites

Minimum age of 16.

Learners should be aware that this certificate is a requirement for MCA Certificates of Competency (CoC) including OOW (Yacht/Unlimited), Master 200, and Y3/Y4 Engineering.
